2024-2025 Verification of Nonfiling Instructions

Within 45 days of submitting an LSAC fee waiver application, you must upload supporting documentation to your LSAC JD Account for verification. This documentation includes your, your spouse’s, and (if dependent) your parents’ federal tax forms. (LSAC determines your independent or dependent status based on your answers in the fee waiver application.)

If you are considered an independent applicant, you must submit your and your spouse’s (if applicable) 2023 federal tax form(s). If either you or your spouse is not required to file a 2023 federal tax form, then you and/or your spouse must obtain proof of nonfiling from the IRS.

If you are considered a dependent applicant, you must submit your 2023 federal tax form as well as your parents’ 2023 federal tax form. If either you and/or your parents are not required to file a 2023 federal tax form, then you and/or your parents must obtain proof of nonfiling from the IRS.

How to Obtain Proof of Nonfiling

To obtain acceptable proof of nonfiling, visit the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website at www.IRS.gov opens in new window. On the IRS homepage, click the Sign in to Your Account link. Alternatively, you can request an account transcript by mail opens in new window.

If either you, your spouse, and/or your parents are using the IRS Form 4506-T, it needs to be sent directly to the IRS, and the IRS must return the applicable nonfiling proof directly to you, your spouse, and/or your parents.

Once you’ve obtained the proof of nonfiling documentation, you must upload it to your LSAC JD Account along with your other supporting documentation.

This is important. The IRS states that Verification of Nonfiling Letters are not available until after June 15 for the current tax year (for example, after June 15, 2024, for the 2023 tax year). LSAC will delay sending CAS reports and all other services until Verification of Nonfiling Letters are received and fee waivers have been finalized.

Any falsification of information presented to LSAC for consideration of a fee waiver application is subject to LSAC misconduct and irregularities proceedings.
