Online Testing Assistance, May 2020 through June 2021

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced cancellation of in-person testing, LSAC recognized that online assessment could create problems of equity and access. Not everyone has access to a computer, or reliable internet, or a quiet place to study and test. And these issues disproportionately affect minoritized and economically challenged candidates.

From the start, LSAC made a commitment to provide a loaner device to any test taker who requested a computer, at no additional cost to them. LSAC also offered to pay for a hotel room for any test taker who needed reliable internet or a quiet place to test.

Between May 2020 and June 2021, LSAC has provided free loaner devices to nearly 4,000 test takers who requested a computer.

Similarly, LSAC has provided hotel reimbursement to more than 2,000 test takers who needed reliable internet or a quiet place to test.

We will continue to work hard to help every test taker have the resources they need to test, as part of our commitment to help drive greater diversity, equity, and access to legal education.

The racial/ethnic data in this table incorporate maximum reporting, which means that candidates may select multiple races/ethnicities. All races/ethnicities selected by an individual candidate are counted in the respective racial/ethnic group. As a result of this overlap, summing the racial/ethnic category totals yields a larger number than the total number of candidates.

Please note: A significant number of test takers requested and received both a free loaner device and hotel reimbursement for a given test. In the tables above, test takers who received both forms of assistance are counted only once for that test. An asterisk is shown when there are fewer than 5 test takers in any category.
