Interpretive Guide to Undergraduate Grading Systems

LSAC’s Interpretive Guide to Undergraduate Grading Systems (IGUGS) helps law school admission file readers analyze undergraduate schools’ grading systems, policies, and degree requirements without generating more paperwork. Many undergraduate schools place their transcripts’ key, along with other notes about their grading policies, on the back side of their transcripts. However, only the front sides of transcripts are provided with Credential Assembly Service (CAS) Law School Reports. IGUGS makes this additional information available to file readers online.

LSAC-Member School Benefits

If you are logged-in to your LSAC Member-School account, you can view expanded information on Averages and Counts for individual undergraduate schools. Averages and Counts displays Average LSAT, Average UGPA, and the number of candidates associated with those averages for graduates of that school since 1992. This information is not available to public users of IGUGS.

How to Use IGUGS

You can search for schools in a few different ways:

  • To search by school code, type in a code and click Search. The school’s name and search results will appear.
  • To search by state or Canadian province, select a state or province from the pull-down menu, then use the second pull-down menu to select a particular school and click Search. That school’s results will appear.
  • To search by school name, type the name of the school in the Enter School Name box. You may also type a portion of the name (e.g., “Saint” or “West”). All of the schools containing that name or phrase will appear in the Select School pull-down menu. If a particular university has more than one college or campus, they will all be listed in the Select School menu.
  • To find information for an international institution, click “Search by Foreign School Name” and select the school from the Foreign Country School pull-down menu.

If the school has not provided grading-system information, a notice to that effect will appear.

A link to a list of regional accrediting bodies is included at the bottom of each Transcript Key screen. These accrediting organizations can provide further information about undergraduate schools.
