Law School Inspiration: Stephanie’s Story

Dual JD Fellow Works to Fight Human Trafficking

Photo of Stephanie Fong Stephanie Fong is a 3L student in the Canadian & American Dual JD program at University of Windsor Faculty of Law and University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. Students in this program earn Canadian and American JD degrees simultaneously over the course of three years. Stephanie is a recipient of Detroit Mercy Law’s Voice for Justice Fellowship and the Social Justice Fellowship Award from Windsor Law.

In the summer of 2017, Stephanie worked with the world’s largest antislavery organization, International Justice Mission (IJM). After training at IJM’s headquarters in Washington, DC, she was deployed to South Asia to work on human trafficking and bonded labor casework in the legal department. During her time there, she supported her team in training over 100 magistrate judges on bonded labor and its adjudication. She also witnessed her office aid police and government officials in a rescue operation, freeing three bonded laborers from a brick kiln. They, along with another escaped laborer, had been trapped for four months and forced to work 13-hour days under violent conditions. The four survivors subsequently underwent rehabilitation, restoration, and transition into their native village with the assistance of IJM’s aftercare team, and police brought criminal charges against the perpetrator.
